New Investment for Liverpool FC

Jeff Bezos: Amazon founder part of consortium that agrees to buy into Liverpool

New Investment for Liverpool FC

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool FC, have reached a definitive agreement to sell a strategic minority investment in the club to 1892 Holdings. This consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes prominent investors such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The deal is set to bring together expertise from global business, technology, and investment to support Liverpool’s long-term growth ambitions both on and off the pitch.

As part of the agreement, Amit Bhatia is slated to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman, joining an expanded board, pending regulatory approvals. Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire businessman Lakshmi Mittal, previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before divesting his stake last month. Jeff Bezos, while a significant investor through K5 Sports, will not join Liverpool’s board. However, Bryan Baum, founder of K5 Sports, and Eduardo Saverin’s wife, Elaine Saverin, will join the board at Anfield.

FSG confirmed that they will retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC. The transaction is not expected to impact the club’s approach to the transfer window, and no new or separate transfer budget is associated with this investment. The agreement also includes an option for the consortium to increase its investment in the future, positioning them for potential majority shareholding if FSG decides to sell.

Strategic Vision and Club Valuation

Mike Gordon, President of FSG, highlighted that Liverpool’s sustained success is built on a long-term vision. He stated that this approach continues to attract respected investors globally. Gordon expressed confidence that Bhatia and the consortium share this long-term philosophy, believing their experience and perspective will enhance the club’s existing strong foundations.

Amit Bhatia, speaking on behalf of 1892 Holdings, conveyed the consortium’s pride in investing in Liverpool. He expressed profound respect for FSG’s ownership and their achievements at Anfield, calling it a significant privilege to partner with a club of Liverpool’s stature. Bhatia affirmed the consortium’s deep belief in Liverpool and its leadership, looking forward to supporting the club’s continued success.

This investment follows FSG’s previous sale of a minority stake to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity. FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010. The club has seen significant growth in value since then, marked by on-pitch success, including a Champions League title in 2019 and a Premier League title in the 2019-20 season, as well as off-pitch developments like a new training ground and stadium redevelopment.

Investor Profiles and Fan Concerns

Jeff Bezos, the world’s fourth-richest person, marks his first confirmed foray into sports ownership with this investment. He stepped down as CEO of Amazon five years ago but remains a major shareholder. His other ventures include aerospace company Blue Origin, venture capital firm Nash Holdings, and The Washington Post. Bezos has been linked with sports investments previously, particularly in American sports franchises.

Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook, is also a key part of the consortium. The involvement of such high-profile investors has drawn attention from various quarters.

Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly (SOS) has raised questions regarding the investment. An SOS spokesperson indicated their desire to understand what the consortium will gain from their 30% stake and whether their interests align with the club’s long-term well-being or if it is merely a “trophy” acquisition. The group has reached out to the Independent Football Regulator to monitor the next steps following this announcement.

Concerns have also been voiced by some fans regarding Amazon’s past treatment of workers and unions. Gareth Roberts, a Liverpool season-ticket holder and host of the Late Challenge LFC podcast, expressed unease about Amazon’s practices. A 2020 Trades Union Congress report highlighted issues such as “long, gruelling shifts with unreasonable productivity targets” at Amazon. In 2024, over 200 workers participated in strike action at an Amazon site in Birmingham over pay and union rights, though Amazon stated it regularly reviews pay to ensure competitiveness. The closing of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
