Darwin Test sees Australia’s batting struggle, Smith top-scores amid crowd remark
Australia’s batting unit faced scrutiny after being bowled out for 198 on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin. This marks the third consecutive home season opener where Australian batters have been dismissed for under 200 runs. The decision by captain Pat Cummins to bat first on a drop-in surface proved challenging, particularly in the dewy early-morning conditions.
Only Steve Smith managed to prosper, top-scoring with 71 runs. His innings, however, was not without incident or difficulty. Smith confessed to edging a ball on 7 runs off Ebadot Hossain, which audio technology failed to detect. He was also dropped in the slips when on 2 runs, indicating a series of lucky breaks contributed to his score.
During his innings, Smith briefly halted play due to an issue with the sight screen. This delay prompted a spectator to make a remark, captured on camera and shared on social media. The fan was heard saying, “Just hit the damn thing, Smudge. Stop being a princess. You are not bigger than the game, Steve, deal with it.” This exchange amused fans online, who noted the spectator’s direct reaction to Smith’s request.
Batting challenges and conditions
Smith described the batting conditions as among the toughest he has encountered in his career, particularly at the top of the order in Australia. He noted that the ball was seaming significantly, making it extremely tricky for top-order batters. Smith also mentioned that he experienced a moment where he “forgot how to hold the bat” during the initial 30 balls of his innings, attributing it to his hands being too close together, which affected his bat face integrity.
The Australian vice-captain also commented on the pitch conditions, suggesting that while some thought the wicket was “rock hard” the previous day, it felt “tacky” on the morning of the match, possibly due to dew. He indicated that if similar conditions persist, batting could remain difficult.
Australia’s struggles in home season openers are not new, having been dismissed for 104 against India in 2024-25 and 132 against England in 2025-26 in previous opening Tests. The shift of the season’s start to Darwin has yielded similar challenging beginnings for the batting lineup.
The team’s preparation included intra-squad match simulations in Brisbane, but Smith maintained that the responsibility for the performance lay with the players. He was the only Australian batter to last more than 70 minutes at the crease during the innings.
Bangladesh’s strong response
Hasan Mahmud was a standout performer for Bangladesh, claiming a career-best 6/55. Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed also contributed with two wickets each, as Bangladesh’s pace attack accounted for all 10 Australian wickets.
In response, Bangladesh finished the opening day confidently at 96/1 from 24 overs. This left them 102 runs behind Australia with nine wickets in hand. Mitchell Starc provided Australia’s only breakthrough, dismissing Shadman Islam for 20 runs.
An unbeaten 60-run partnership between Tanzid Hasan (32*) and Mominul Haque (35*) put Bangladesh firmly in control by the end of the first day’s play. The first Test is scheduled to run from August 13-17 at Marrara Stadium in Darwin.
