Dambulla to global icon: Virat Kohli’s 18 years in international cricket
A remarkable journey from Dambulla debut
Virat Kohli, who made his India debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla 18 years ago, has established one of cricket’s most decorated careers. His journey began with a modest 12 runs on debut, but he has since accumulated over 28,000 international runs and 85 centuries. He is second only to Sachin Tendulkar in the century count.
Kohli, who captained India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2008, opened the innings in his first ODI match. He was dismissed by Nuwan Kulasekara, and India was bowled out for 146, with Sri Lanka winning by eight wickets. This unassuming start paved the way for a career marked by consistency and numerous records.

Record-breaking achievements across formats
Kohli holds several unique records, including being the only player to have won every major white-ball title in the sport’s history, from the U19 World Cup to the IPL. He also achieved a clean sweep of ICC Awards in 2018, winning ‘Cricketer of the Year’, ‘Test Player of the Year’, and ‘ODI Player of the Year’ simultaneously. That year, he scored 2,735 runs in 37 matches at an average of 68.37, with 11 centuries and nine fifties.
Among his other distinctions, Kohli is the only Indian to have scored an international century on both Independence Day (114* against West Indies in 2019) and Republic Day (116 against Australia in 2012, his first Test century). He is also one of only four Indians to have scored Test centuries in all SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) nations.
In ODI cricket, Kohli has an exceptional record in run-chases of 350-plus runs, scoring a century in three out of four such successful chases for India. He has accumulated 411 runs in four innings at an average of 205.50, with three centuries and a fifty in these high-pressure scenarios.
Kohli holds the record for the most runs across 10 successive ODI innings, with 995 runs at an average of 142.14, including five centuries and three fifties. This run also saw him become the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs, reaching the milestone in just 205 innings.
He has scored back-to-back ODI centuries 12 times, a record in the format. He also boasts seven Test double centuries, the most by an Indian captain, achieving them faster than Don Bradman, in 1,176 days compared to Bradman’s 1,484 days.
Dominance in white-ball cricket and consistent performance
Kohli is the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history, with 1,292 runs in 35 matches, including 15 fifties. Notably, India has won every match where he has remained unbeaten in the tournament, a feat he has achieved eight times, scoring 464 runs with six fifties.
He also holds the most ‘Player of the Series’ awards in international cricket, with a total of 22, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 20. Furthermore, he has the most ‘Player of the Match’ awards in ICC limited-over tournaments, with 15.
In the IPL, Kohli has recorded nine seasons with 500 runs or more, including four successive seasons of 600-plus runs from 2023-26. Two of these seasons, 2025 and 2026, resulted in trophy wins for his team.
His consistency is further highlighted by being the only player to have achieved 900-plus points in Test, ODIs, and T20Is, having been a former world number one across all formats. Among the top 20 run-getters in international cricket, Kohli is currently the only one with an all-format fifty-plus batting average, standing at 52.71.
Kohli’s performance in ICC white-ball events is also notable, with 3,834 runs in 90 matches and 87 innings at an average of 61.83, including six centuries and 33 fifties.
His career, spanning 18 years since his debut on August 18, 2008, continues to be defined by significant milestones and contributions to Indian cricket.
