Gothenburg: Mount’s injury overshadows Manchester United’s draw with PSG
Manchester United played to a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in a friendly match held in Gothenburg, a result that was largely overshadowed by an injury sustained by midfielder Mason Mount. The England international was forced to leave the field less than 20 minutes into the contest, raising concerns among fans and coaching staff.
Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023, has faced a series of injury challenges since his arrival at Old Trafford. His appearance against PSG marked another instance where he was unable to complete a full match. Reports indicate that he appeared to suffer a foot injury during the game in Sweden. Following discussions with coaches on the touchline, Mount was substituted, with Tyler Fletcher coming on as his replacement.
Since joining Manchester United, Mount’s involvement has been limited, with only 54 league appearances recorded across his first three seasons, many of which were as a substitute. This latest setback adds to a pattern of fitness issues that have prevented him from establishing a consistent presence in the squad.
Carrick’s Cautious Approach
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick addressed the concerns surrounding Mount’s early exit, downplaying the severity of the situation. Carrick explained that the decision to withdraw Mount was primarily a precautionary measure, emphasizing the club’s desire to protect the player.
“He got kicked,” Carrick told reporters after the match. “We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.” This statement was reiterated to MUTV, the club’s in-house television station, further highlighting the cautious approach taken by the coaching staff.
Further encouraging signs emerged as Mount was later observed walking without any apparent difficulty as he made his way towards the team coach. This observation suggests that the injury may not be as serious as initially feared, offering some relief to the club and its supporters.
Match Details and Other Concerns
The friendly match saw Manchester United fall behind early, with Ibrahim Mbaye scoring for PSG in the second minute. Despite the French giants missing several key players, they managed to take an initial lead. Mount’s injury occurred while United were trailing 1-0.
However, Bryan Mbeumo equalized for United in the 32nd minute. The goal came after Amad Diallo won the ball back and provided an assist to Mbeumo. United created additional opportunities throughout the match, with Mbeumo having a chance to score a second goal, but he was denied by PSG’s goalkeeper, Matvey Safonov.
The match also presented another injury scare for United early in the second half when Tom Heaton, the team’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, sustained a right hamstring problem. This occurred as he rushed out to make a clearance, adding to the club’s concerns regarding player fitness.

Carrick expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance, particularly their ability to adapt during the game. “I enjoyed it. Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should’ve scored more goals,” Carrick commented to MUTV. He also noted the importance of players problem-solving on the field, stating, “It’s good for the boys sometimes to have to problem-solve and find their own way and I thought we did that. That prepares them for the season as well.”
Late in the game, United had further chances from players like Fletcher, Shea Lacey, and captain Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes showed promising link-up play with new arrival Youri Tielemans, which Carrick viewed as an encouraging sign for the upcoming season.

Manchester United has two more friendly fixtures scheduled before the start of their Premier League campaign. They are set to face Leeds in Dublin on Wednesday, followed by a match against AC Milan in Wroclaw three days later. Their Premier League season will commence with an away game against newly promoted Hull on 22 August.
