Squad Announcement for Pakistan Series
Squad Announcement for Pakistan Series
England has announced its 16-man squad for the initial two Test matches against Pakistan. The series is scheduled to commence at Headingley on Wednesday, 19 August. Among the notable inclusions are Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence, both of whom have been recalled to the national side.
Joe Root will lead the team as captain, marking his first permanent captaincy since 2022. Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach for the series. The new head coach, Stephen Fleming, is expected to begin his tenure in December against South Africa, though he was involved in the squad selection discussions for the upcoming series.
Key Player Returns and Absences
Dan Lawrence, who last played a Test in September 2024, has been rewarded for his strong domestic performance. He is currently the second-highest run-scorer in Division One of the County Championship, having accumulated 788 runs at an average of 65.66, including five centuries, across 13 innings. Lawrence is slated to bat at number six, filling a middle-order position.
Ollie Pope also returns to the squad after being dropped following a period of poor form during the Ashes Tests in Australia. He has scored 510 runs at 56.66 for Surrey in the County Championship, including five scores of 50 or more. Sam Cook, a seamer, is included in the squad for the first time since last summer, having made his international debut against Zimbabwe in May 2022.

Jacob Bethell will miss the entire series due to a right knee injury sustained during the ODI series against India last month. Jordan Cox, who made his Test debut against New Zealand at The Oval earlier this summer, will bat at number three in Bethell’s absence. Brydon Carse also makes a return after recovering from a broken wrist that kept him out of the Indian Premier League and the start of the Test summer.
Selection Strategy and Future Outlook
England Men’s National Selector, Marcus North, stated that the squad for the first two Tests aims to balance emerging talent with the necessary experience to face a strong Pakistan team. He highlighted Lawrence’s return, noting his experience, maturity, and skill as beneficial for the middle order.
North also commented on the absence of Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed from the squad. Curran was not considered ready for this Test squad due to a heavy summer workload and ongoing minor injuries. Ahmed, while highly regarded, was not selected as the focus was on fielding the best six batters with Jamie Smith at number seven, which led to Lawrence’s inclusion at number six.
Regarding former captain Ben Stokes, North confirmed that Stokes made the decision to retire and is currently playing well for Durham. North’s role is to focus on available players until Stokes reverses his retirement decision and becomes available for selection.
The series marks England’s first Test outing since Ben Stokes’ retirement and Brendon McCullum’s departure as head coach.

The squad includes players such as Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue. The series against Pakistan is set to begin on Wednesday, 19 August.
