Bengaluru: Smaran aims for 1000 Ranji runs and improved T20 game
Karnataka Star Prepares for New Season
R Smaran, the Karnataka batter, is focused on improving his game across all formats and aims to achieve the 1000-run mark in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. His rise in cricket has been noted, particularly after scoring twin centuries in his debut 2025 Ranji Trophy season and becoming the highest run-scorer with 950 runs in the 2026 season, which saw Karnataka reach the final after 11 years.
Smaran works with his childhood coach, Syed Zabiulla, during the short off-season. He emphasizes the importance of utilizing this limited time optimally to add new technical skills or make mindset changes that can lead to more runs. The off-season preparation involves switching between red-ball and white-ball practice to adapt to the demands of each format.
The 23-year-old left-hander is set for his second Duleep Trophy campaign with the South Zone team, with the tournament scheduled to begin at the BCCI’s CoE in Bengaluru later this month. He views the Duleep Trophy as an important launchpad for the season, stating that runs scored there matter significantly and can set the tone for the rest of the year.
Adapting to Different Formats and Setting Goals
Smaran has demonstrated versatility across formats, adapting his approach to the game’s requirements. He was a key player in Karnataka’s 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy triumph, scoring 433 runs in seven innings, and was also the leading run-scorer for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 319 runs in seven innings. He attributes his ability to switch between formats to his off-season preparation, where he constantly alternates between red-ball and white-ball practice.
While his red-ball prowess is well-documented, Smaran is also working on his T20 game. His first full IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) provided a learning experience, and he acknowledges the need to improve his aggressive batting from the first ball in T20s. He aims to push his T20 strike rate to 170 or 180, recognizing that modern T20 games often see scores of 230-240.
Smaran believes that the mental aspect is more crucial than technique when switching formats. He focuses on being in the right headspace and understanding the match situation. He is also actively refining his technique against spin, including working on shots like the sweep and reverse sweep to unsettle bowlers, especially on turning tracks.
Despite missing the BCCI Emerging series due to injury, Smaran is now fully fit and eager to return to the field. He has set a goal to remain at the top of the scoring charts in the Ranji Trophy, aiming for 1000 runs this year. He also expressed his readiness for leadership responsibilities, having captained Karnataka at the age-group level and being part of the Maharaja Trophy-winning side.

The Importance of Preparation and Mindset
Smaran emphasizes that preparation is extremely important, particularly during the off-season. His coach, Syed Zabiulla, plans his training to simulate challenges faced during the Ranji Trophy, including practicing on various types of wickets and difficult pitches. This preparation helps him not only for the first innings but also for the second innings when conditions become tougher.
He also highlighted the mental side of the game, learning from experienced international players during his time with SRH. These interactions helped him understand how to handle consistent pressure and specific match situations. Smaran’s primary motivation remains guiding Karnataka to a different result in the Ranji Trophy after coming up short in the previous final, focusing on getting into the knockouts and performing well in those crucial games.
Smaran aims to keep expectations aside and enjoy the game, believing that too many expectations can lead to self-imposed pressure. His focus is on taking each game as it comes and playing with pride for his state and team. He views the Duleep Trophy as a significant tournament to set the tone for the rest of the season.
He continues to work on expanding his range of shots, particularly against spin, to make bowlers uncomfortable. Smaran believes that while playing straight can be effective, a wider range of shots is necessary to contribute consistently in high-scoring T20 environments. He is committed to putting in the necessary work during the off-season to be prepared for all types of bowlers in future IPL seasons.
Smaran’s dedication to continuous improvement is evident in his approach to training and his clear goals for the upcoming season, including his aim to score 1000 runs in the Ranji Trophy.
